To The Border.---------------------------------------CERBERE is a village in Southern France, near the Spanish border, on the railway line from Perpignan France to Barcelona Spain. --France and Spain use different rail gauges,so Cerbere and Port Bou are busy change over points.--There are rail tunnels to Spain and a road round the mountain. Cerbere has beaches , seafront, and a small harbour. Cerbere is hilly and prone to winds from the Mediterranean sea. The bay is pretty.---The nearest airport to Cerbere is Perpignan in France, then take the train.-------Cerbere is 36km from Perpignan ,and 716km from Paris.-- FRANCE

=============================================PORTBOU is in the Costa Brava region of Spain, near the French Border. It is a charming village with a population of around 1300. Good as a stopover on a car or train journey. I stayed in a small hotel.-- Portbou is nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains on the Mediterranean sea coast. There is a steep slope street from the rail station to the seafront. There is a pebbled beach and a small marina.---------The German Philosipher Walter Benjamin, a Jew fleeing the Nazis. committed suicide rather than be captured by the Gestapo in 1940. He is buried here. A Memorial to him has been built on the cliff top. The memorial consists of a staircase going down to the crashing sea. --- There are plenty of eating places and bars, even so Portbou is a place for Peace and Quite. (( Portbou rail station is a large border station from 1878, No border formalities nowadays. The lines are Narbonne to Portbou and Barcelone to Cerbere.))
